This paper presents some concepts of bilingualism starting with general definitions before exploring definitions based on specific criteria which
can be combined, such as “age of second language acquisition”,
“maintenance of the first language”, “status of the languages”. The way
each criterium can lead to different consequences in specific contexts is
also taken into account.

The author makes a critical analysis on the theory of Hermers and Blanc (2000) and develops the definitions of bilingualism in Mackey’s theory (2000). The article discusses the divergences in the definitions presented and also proposes a broad discussion about the development of bilingual education in Brazil.

This paper aims to discuss the construction of the cultural identity of bilingual individuals. The article is based on the theories of Harmers and Blanc (2000) and Grosjean (1972) through which are established relations between bilingualism and biculturalism in a way that reveals the importance of language as a main point in the formation of a cultural identity in bilingual individuals. The study also brings up considerations about the bilingual education role in the formation of the cultural identity and how it works in different contexts.
